About us

The department of Microbiology was established in the year 1963 under the leadership of Professor Dr. Jayaram Panicker. The first batch of MBBS students were admitted in the year 1963 with an annual intake of 60 students and the number was enhanced to 150 in 2006 and upgraded the intake to 175. From 2019 onwards competency based Under graduate curriculum was implemented. Post graduate course ( M D Microbiology ) started in the year 2010. with an yearly intake of two candidates .Dept. is approved as a center for PHD under KUHS from 2022 onwards.
Diagnostic Microbiology laboratory is a fully fledged 24 hour laboratory. During the COVID-19 pandemic on April 2020 molecular laboratory was set up for COVID-19 testing by RT-PCR.TRUENAT TB testing was established June 2023. The infrastructure of the department is spread out as two wings:the academic wing at C1 block near Principal office and the diagnostic wing at George Podippara block.

The academic wing of the department includes:

  • Demonstration rooms: A room with audio-visual aids and accommodates 50 students.
  • Practical Hall.
  • Museum: Contains labelled specimens, charts and models with a seating capacity for at least 30 students. A catalogue is also made available to the students for reference.
  • Departmental library: Contains about 143 books.
  • Departmental research laboratory: Equipped with instruments and reagents for the use of departmental research activity.

The diagnostic wing of the department includes: Separate service laboratories for

  • Bacteriology
  • Virology
  • Mycology
  • Parasitology
  • Tuberculosis
  • Serology
  • Immunology
  • HIV Testing-ICTC and SRL.
  • Molecular diagnostic service at C1 block.

Separate accommodation is also provided for

  • Media preparation
  • Storage
  • Autoclaving and discard

In addition to all the routine equipment, glassware, kits and reagents required in a microbiology diagnostic laboratory, our laboratory is equipped with state of the art equipment like,

  • VITEK 2 Compact – Designed for rapid and reliable identification and antimicrobial susceptibility testing, contributing to improved therapeutic success and patient outcomes.
  • BacT ALERT 3D – Automated, colorimetric rapid microbial detection system for blood and body fluids

QUALITY ASSURANCE PROGRAMME:

We ensure the credibility of our laboratory services by participating in CMC MICRO EQAS-Bacteriology And Serology (under the aegis of IAMM),Parasitology EQAS organized by Wellcome Trust Research Laboratory, CMC Vellore.

ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES

Conducting theory and practical classes for under Graduate-MBBS, BDS, BSc. Nursing, DMLT, CSSD, Dialysis technology, BCVT, Perfusion technology students. Conduct clinical classes, case, discussions, seminars for post Graduate students. Training of interns & final year part-1 MBBS students during their elective modules. Staff & PGs participate in various CMEs state & international level & present scientific paper.

CME’S

  1. Department conducted a Workshop on “Molecular advances in Medical Research” in association with MG University, Kottayam on April 6th and 7th, 2022.
  2. World Hepatitis day was observed by conducting a CME on Update on Viral hepatitis on 2nd August 2022,.
  3. Antimicrobial awareness Quiz for post graduate students was conducted on 29th November 2022
  4. Workshop on PCR –for post graduate students on 24/01/2023
  5. Workshop on Malaria –Diagnosis by microscopy on 25/04/2023
