Government Medical College Kottayam
The Third Medical College in Kerala, was established in 1962. It was formally inaugurated on 03.12.1962 by Sri.R Sankar,the then Chief Minister of Kerala in the presence of Sri.M P Govindan Nair, the Health Minister.
It has a campus which spreads across 265 acres of beautiful land shared by two panchayats (Arpookkara and Athirampuzha) and Kottayam municipality. This is a tertiary care hospital catering to people from five districts including Kottayam, Idukki, Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta and Ernakulam. This is the referral hospital for lakhs of pilgrims visiting Sabarimala temple. The world-renowned tourism spot Kumarakom, is just 14 kilometers away. Government Medical College Kottayam is a 2094 bedded hospital which has about 3000 out-patients and more than 500 emergency patient visits per day. The number of in-patients being treated in this hospital is more than one lakh annually. There are 327 regular teaching faculty and more than 1550 other staff working in this institution. Annual intake for medical undergraduate course is 175 and that for post-graduation is 142. Total annual intake for pharmacy and other para–medical courses is 196.
This college, in its sixty years of development, has become one of the top-graded academic institutions and along with that, won the trust and hope of the common man in Central Kerala as a center of excellence for advanced treatments . On the academic front, it is recognized as the Regional Medical Education Center of the National Medical Commission. On the clinical side, while the general specialty departments have set excellent standards of academics and patient care, the sub-specialties have made their mark by becoming pioneers and leaders in organ transplants like heart, kidney and liver and in performing advanced interventions and complex operations. The Department of Cardiology has the distinction of performing the highest number of primary angioplasty in India. The first heart transplant in government sector medical colleges in India was performed by the CTVS Department in this hospital. A test tube baby was born for the first time in Kerala in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of this hospital. The Departments of Orthopedics and Plastic Surgery perform the highest number of trauma surgeries and micro vascular surgeries respectively in Kerala. The first liver transplant surgery in the government sector was done in 2022 in the Department of Surgical Gastroenterology. First multidisciplinary Transgender Clinic in India at the government sector began here in 2017. We are also the pioneers in Tertiary Care Palliative Services and Cardiac Rehabilitation Services in Kerala. The way in which COVID 19 pandemic was handled in this institution attracted global acclaim recently.
The prestigious Arogya Manthan 3.0 national award for providing the highest number of free treatments under the AYUSHMAN Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Scheme and Best Performer award of MEDISEP were bestowed on this institution in 2022. Recognitions from LaQshya (Labour Room Quality Improvement Scheme of NHM) and certificates of Mother and Baby Friendly Hospital Initiatives are reflections of the big strides in quality of mother and baby care in this hospital. In its diamond jubilee year the institution is aspiring for NABH accreditation and NIRF Ranking.
