Rare Donor Registry
- Why- Referel Centre, Daily one case with alloantibody encountered, Multiple
alloantibodies – Crossmatch with 100s of units , Wastage of resources, Precious time
lost - How-Donor centric- Individuals who are motivated and aligned with the needs of the
blood centre. - Advantages of a system centric donation culture , Remains unaffected with the change
in staff of the blood centre. - Who are recruited?
O group Donors, Voluntary, Repeat donors > 10 times, Motivated, Local residents,
Students not focused as they may go abroad, Located around ½ hour distance from blood
centre. - Registration – 1300, Sampled 400+ donors
- Antigen negative donors available in one phone call
- Donors reported within ½- 1 hr as warranted by the situation
- Highly motivated and altruistic
- Blood Units for patients with multiple allo antibodies at Trivandrum bled at GMC
Kottayam and transported to KIMS TVM also. - 100 % Donors returned on call back- Success of the program
- e negative rare donors recruited for patients in 1-2 days, Complex heart surgeries done
after mobilizing e negative donors across state.

Apheresis Donor Registry
- Why? Patients requiring transfusions – Chronic diseases like Cancer, Blood dyscrasias.
Donors brought are not motivated - How? Voluntary , Regular, Repeat , motivated donors motivated, educated, counselled,
demonstration of the procedure, CBC and TTD screened and enrolled in the Apheresis
registry. - Advantages of motivated donors who are aligned with the instituitional requirements.
- Good Donor Turnaround Time and Donor Return 100%
- They are extended family for the blood centre.
- Blood Centre is involved in motivating and enrolling donors to the registry.
- More commitment from Blood Centre staff
- Good donor response to shortages
- Patient bystanders relieved of finding appropriate donors.

Teaching the Teachers – Effective donor recruitment of college students
- Why- Effective blood donation motivation , coordination of blood donation camps etc
affected if the NSS programme officers/ institutional administrators are not motivated. - How- Educational sessions for NSS programme officers and administrators of the
instituitions conducted at blood centre. - Good Practices of the institutions highlighted in the public forums.
- Good rapport with NSS programme officers of the district.
Key outcomes - Well aware of the blood centre requirements.
- Good response to blood shortages by the conduct of blood donation camps
- Blood donation drives not only to satisfy the mandatory requirements
- 3 monthly blood donation drives organized
