ACHIEVEMENTS
  • Instrumental in making the Department a Centre of Excellence in Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery in Kerala. The Department has done more than 1200 open heart surgeries and about 850 other surgeries in 2017. This is one of the few centres in South India which manages different types of Aortic aneurysm surgery. The department also offers latest advances like Heart & Lung Transplantation, ‘Off Pump’ Bypass Surgery, Thoracoscopic Surgery, Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery and Aneurysm Stenting. This centre also has the distinction of doing the maximum number of valve repair surgeries in India.
  • Started Paediatric Cardiac Surgery. This is the only centre under the Government of Kerala which takes care of neonatal and infant cardiac surgical problems.
  • Started Heart Transplantation first time in Govt. sector in India.
  • With the help of a Hospital Development Society project, increased the number of operations from100 cases / year in 2000 to nearly 2000 cases / year in 2017-18.
  • Started and established Coronary Artery Surgery in Kottayam Medical College since 2005.
  • Started and established Off pump CABG in Kottayam Medical College
  • Started ‘redo CABG’ for the first time in Govt. sector in Kerala
  • Started and established Aneurysm Surgery & Thoracoscopic Surgery at Kottayam Medical College. This institution is now one of the few centres in South India which offers management of different types of Aortic Aneurysms.
  • Involved in implementation of programmes like “Thalolam” by Govt. of Kerala, ‘Heart to heart’ by Rotary club and ‘Hridayathalam’ by Lions’ club.
  • Started Pulmonary Endarterectomy first time in Govt. Sector in India.
  • Immersed in developing Kottayam Medical College as a unique centre dealing with full spectrum of cardiothoracic surgery including lung, heart, oesophageal and chest wall reconstructive surgeries in the world.
  • Took over the additional charge of Superintendent of Govt. Medical College, Kottayam on 08-07-2016 and could start various developmental projects
  • Started various developmental projects worth Rs.1000 crore and 73 projects were inaugurated and started functioning.
