About Us

The Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R), started functioning in 1982. Our aim is to enhance and restore functional ability and quality of life to those with physical impairments or disabilities with diseases affecting the brain, spinal cord, nerves, bones, joints, ligments, muscles and tendons. We focus on improvement of the quality of life of the patient through a dynamic team-oriented approach. While the traditional medical approach aims at “adding years to life”, PMR with its functional model, accomplishes “adding life to years”. We serve the differently abled population of nearly four districts namely Kottayam, Idukki, Alapuzha and Ernakulam
Brief history-
This Department had started functioning in the OP block in 1982 with facilities for prosthetics, orthotics and physiotherapy. 6 beds were received for male patients in ward no 14. 4 beds in ward no 19 and 2 beds in ward no 18 were reserved for female patients. In addition to this patients used to be admitted to the pay ward also. The new building in PMR with the artificial limb centre was inaugurated on 7th October 1994 by the then Chief Minister Sri K Karunakaran. The OP and Physiotherapy sections were shifted to the new building in 2002. Ward no 28 was established in the new building with 15 beds for male and 15 for female patients . In the year 2012 MD course in PMR was started with one PG seat per year. In 2014, the facilities for Occupational therapy , Speech therapy , electrodiagnostic studies, musculoskeletal ultrasound and gait analysis were made available in the department.
Musculoskeletal pain management, neuro rehabilitation, cancer rehabilitation, Diabetic foot care, amputee rehabilitation, post surgical rehabilitation of nerve and tendon transfers, pulmonary rehabilitation and rheumatologic rehabilitation are the main medical rehabilitation services that we offer through these facilities
The process of medical rehabilitation includes all the steps taken to treat, train and teach the differently- abled person. These three approaches are used in combination to produce positive changes in all spheres of the individuals life. It is only in this way that the goal of rehabilitation – enabling a person to do the best that he or she is capable of doing can be achieved.
