About Us

Pediatric Surgery is a Super specialty department. The doctors working here have an MCh Pediatric Surgery degree, which is a three year course done after MS General Surgery. The department was started in 1975, under Late Dr. Mani Ninan. Later the department was headed by Late Dr. Madan Mohan. There after headed by Dr. NaryananKutty, Dr. R.R. Varma, Dr. K.N Chandran, Dr. Asokumar.G.M, Dr.Beena.S.V and Dr. Sethunath.S. The department is recognized for One MCh Pediatric Surgery seat from 2015.

Junior residents and Interns are not posted in this department, so there services will not be available. The Pediatric Surgery Department covers Neonatal surgery, Pediatric Surgery and Pediatric Urology. It may be noted that Urological problems in children are handled by Pediatric Surgeons (except urolithiasis at present, due to lack of facilities to tackle these). Solid tumors of children are also handled by Pediatric surgeons in collaboration with medical oncologist. The main burden of work is on managing congenital anomalies of children.

  • The OP strength per year comes around 15000- 16000/ year
  • The IP admission per year is around- 2000 cases.
  • The department does 600-700 major elective case, 250-300 Emergency cases and nearly 250. Minor cases per year (as per 2022 statistics)

The department here has to cover a population from nearly five districts and also several patients are from adjacent Theni district in Tamil Nadu, and Lakshadweep patients come here to seek Pediatric Surgical services. However the staff strength and facilities are limited inspite of huge population being covered. This leads to a long waiting list of nearly 10-12 months for elective cases.

There is no casualty service, however emergency cases are seen on call basis, based on the merit of the cases.
