About Us

THE DEPARTMENT OF PATHOLOGY, MEDICAL COLLEGE, KOTTAYAM came into existence in 1963. PROFESSOR DR.R.SARASWATHY AMMAL took charge as Head of the Department on 25-1-1963 and she was assisted in her activities by Dr. CKS HAMEED, DR.K.K.RAGHAVA WARRIER and DR.NIRMALA DEVI.
Dr.Saraswathy Bhargavi left the Department on 2-5-64AN and Dr.M.BALARAMAN NAIR joined as Professor on 27-6-64. He was “The Sculptor” of the Department of Pathology. This Department took its shape and attained the backbone under his leadership. He was simultaneously the Professor of Forensic Medicine and thereby promoting Forensic Pathology.
On 29-1-1973 he went on deputation to United Kingdom and Dr. NIRMALA DEVI succeeded him on 30-1-1973 and was subsequently transferred to Aleppey on 3-11-1973. Dr.V.SUMANGALA AMMA took charge on 26-11-1973 as HOD and worked till 28-8-75. Dr. LEELAMMA JOSE took over as HOD on 2-9-75 till 18-11-75. Thereafter Dr. MALINI THOMAS ran the Department for 2 yrs. followed by Dr. LEELAMMA JOSE (25-7-77 TO 24-6-78). Dr. K.R.HARILAL joined as PROFESSOR ON 26-6-1978.
POST GRADUATE COURSE was started in the Department in 1984. Dr. SARA VARGHESE took over as THE DIRECTOR & PROFESSOR from 5-6-87 till 1-7-88 and was followed by Dr. K.R.HARILAL. He was succeeded by Dr.Vijayalekshmi .A (1-6-89). Dr. GRACY GEORGE took over in 18-6-90 to 8-10-91. In July 1994, the most unfortunate thing happened to the
Department , a fire in the Department and much damage was done. Dr.R.JAYALEKSHMI (HOD) came over in November 1994 and during this month the Department was shifted from the serene premises to the “C” Block. Dr.S.VALSALADEVI was the HOD from 7-10-96 followed by Dr. PRASANNA till 6-2-2000. Dr. AGNESAMMA JACOB ran the Department from 30-5-2000 to 1-5-2001 followed by Dr. SUNDARESHAN (1-5-2001). Dr. RAMADEVI took over in 23-5-2001 and was followed by Dr. T.R.SAROJINI (25-8-2003).Following her retirement Dr. USHA POOTHIODE took over (1-5-2004), The Department was transferred to the present “GEORGE PODIPARA BLOCK” during MAY- 2004 and PROFESSOR Dr. JOY AUGUSTINE took over the charge in 1-10-2004 . He was succeeded by HOD DR USHA POOTHIODE on 21-6-2007.From George podipara block Histopathology section is shifted to C1 block and started functioning since April 25th 2011. After that now we have 8 MD Pathology students in a year. Dr. Sankar S. was the HOD from 2016 to 2022 . During this period we started the Annual CME in Hematology–BKON. In 2023 we conducted the 6th BKON annual CME on April 1st , 2023. Platelet aggregometry and complete coagulation work up was started in the hematopatology division in 2021. Our histopathology lab is equipped with automated processor, automated stainer and automated IHC machines. Cytology division is using cytospin for fluid processing. Our department consistent of highly qualified and enthusiastic faculty and lab technicians. Our faculty Dr.RenuThambi, Dr.Jayalekshmy P.L have been awarded FRCP in Pathology recently and others are on the way. Our postgraduate students Dr.Soumya ,Dr.Suryagayathri , Dr. Ann Mili, Dr.Aswathy, Dr.Rini Rachel Philip have been awarded ranks in MD pathology by KUHS. Dr.Kavitha Ravi is the current HOD following the retirement of Dr.Letha V.

There are mainly 3 divisions under Pathology Department namely Histopathology, Hematology & Clinical Pathology and Cytology.

a) Histopathology:- Biopsy , IHC, Second Opinion, Autopsy including fetal autopsy, immunofluorescence, Frozen section.
b) Cytology- FNAC, Fluid cytology, Pap Smear, cell block with Immunohistochemistry
c) Hematology – CBC, ESR, Peripheral smear , Bone marrow Coagulation study, Platelet aggregometry.

The Histopathology department is having facilities for Immunohistochemistry.

In Haematology & Clinical Pathology Lab following investigations are carried out:-

  1. CBC – (Hb, TC, DC, Platelet, Blood indices, RDW) – Computerised report is given using Fully Automated Cell counters .
  2. Peripheral Smear & Bone Marrow Examination including Cytochemical stains.
  3. Reticulocyte Count.
  4. Absolute Eosinophil Count.
  5. Osmotic Fragility Test.
  6. Sickling Test
  7. Bleeding Time
  8. Clotting Time- PT/APTT, INR Facter IX, VIII, Platelet aggregometry.
  9. Urine – RUE, Acetone, Bile salt, Urobilinogen, Bence Jone Protein.
  10. Motion – Routine examination including Ova & Parasites.
  11. Occult blood
  12. CSF (Total TC &DC)

Clinical Pathology Lab is working 24 hrs.
In Cytology Section – FNAC is carried out from 11 AM to 1PM on all working days. Fluid Cytology, Sputum Cytology & Papsmear & Barr body Examination are also done.

ACADEMIC

Programmes offered

  • MBBS-Academic activities in the Department of Pathology- 2022 MBBS batch:
    • Regular theory classes are taken : 3 hours per week. Total no. of classes-80 hours.
    • Small group discussions: 6 days a week(2 hours a week): total no of hours -160. Include practical sessions in histopathology and clinical pathology, as well as topic presentations by students and seminars.
    • Self directed learning by students-topics were given for self study following which assignments were submitted by students. Total no of hours -7.
    • AETCOM (attitude ethics and communications) sessions: 10 hours.
    • Museum activity: Students are assigned museum specimen to study and given small projects based on them.
    • Library activity: Students are given questions based on research article and asked to submit assignments.
    • Exams: Continuous internal assessment in the form short tests, part completion tests (PCT 1,2) and prelims were conducted in university pattern (theory and practical)
    • Mentors : 12 students in pathology are assigned to a faculty for guidance in academics.
    •  Remedial classes for slow learners were conducted after regular working hours on online as well as offline platform.
    • Advanced learners are given special training for Gold Medal exam conducted by IAPM Kerala Chapter.
  • POST GRADUATE SESSIONS
    • Academic sessions were conducted for postgraduates from 9AM – 9.45AM on all working days except Saturdays.

    • All the staff are actively involved in undergraduate & postgraduate teaching including integrated teaching for undergraduate students and CPCs.
  • PARAMEDICAL COURSES
    • Regular classes were taken by allotted faculties according to the syllabus in every week. Both theory and practical classes were running in the department.Regular classes,practical exercises and lab works were there for DMLT students.
