Observance of the World Suicide Prevention Day

World Suicide Prevention Day was observed jointly by the Psychiatry Department of the Government Medical College, Kottayam, Vipassana Emotional Support Center, CMS College, Kottayam, and Central Travancore Psychiatric Society.

From 2021 to 2023, World Suicide Prevention Day champions the theme of “Creating Hope Through Action.” This theme resonates as a compelling rallying cry, emphasizing that alternatives to suicide exist and that, through our collective efforts, we have the power to nurture hope and strengthen preventive measures.

In the meeting held at Joseph Fenn Hall, CMS College, the former principal of Ernakulam Medical College Dr. V. Satish gave the keynote address. CMS College Principal Dr. Varghese C. Joshua presided over the function.

Dr. Joyce Geo (General Secretary, Indian Psychiatric Society- Kerala Unit), Dr. Bobby Thomas (President, CTPS), Dr. Joseph P Varghese (Director, Vipassana), Mr. Soni Joseph (NSS Program Officer) and Dr. John Kunnath (Vipassana) spoke on the occasion.

A seminar was also conducted on various aspects of suicide prevention. Dr. Varghese P Punnoose (Head of the Department of Psychiatry, Govt. Medical College), and Dr. Sandeep Alex (Suicide Prevention Clinic, Govt. Medical College) were the moderators.

Dr. Anju Ashok (Myths and Realities of Suicide), Dr. Bobby Thomas (Stress Management in Youth), Dr. Siby Tarakan (Meaningful Life-Different Perspectives), Dr. Chiku Mathew (Life Skills and Positive Psychology) and Mr. Jomon K. George (Psychological First Aid) presented papers.

There was a short play presented by the Volunteers of the NSS Unit of the College and a discussion followed.

As a continuation of the project, the Department of Psychiatry, National Service Scheme and Vipassana ESC will jointly conduct training programs, awareness activities and counseling sessions for the public.
