MEDICAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT

General Information

The Medical Education Unit of this college has been functioning from 1997 onwards. Our unit was identified as Regional Centre for MET from 2010 and as NMC Nodal centre for faculty development in August 2014 (https://sites.google.com/view/nmc-ncfd-gmck/home?authuser=0) with Dr R Sajith Kumar, Professor Emeritus, Infectious Disease Unit as the convenor. Dr Mary Chacko, Professor and Head, Physiology is the faculty in charge of MEU. The unit has been organizing and participating in various NMC / MCI activities in connection with the AETCOM and CBME program in national, zonal, university and institutional levels as well. So far 54 Basic courses on MET have been organized in this centre and many have been coordinated in eighteen affiliated institutions. Twelve batches of NMC/MCI Advance Course (ACME) with 330 participants from 40 affiliated colleges have been organised here. All of our faculty have completed the same at various nodal centres under NMC(MCI). Currently 23 Medical Colleges have been allocated under our Nodal Centre as per circular D 11011/377/2023/Academic Cell dated 06.04.2023

Aim

To improve the quality of medical training by training the teachers

Objective

  • To sensitize teachers about new concepts in teaching and assessment methods
  • To develop knowledge and clinical skills required for performing the role of competent and effective teacher, administrator, researcher and mentor
  • To assist clinicians to acquire competency in communication and behavioral skills
  • To update knowledge using modern information and research methodology tools.

Achievements

  1. The unit coordinated CME programs by various departments with budget support from the Institutional Research Committee (SBMR).
  2. Dr Sajith Kumar R, the Convenor is also a National Consultant and member of the Expert Committee on revision of BC and AETCOM Curriculum, NMC Expert Group and Reconciliation Board, Expert Group on Implementation & Monitoring, Taskforce for monitoring CBME etc. at NMC.
  3. The Centre has already organized TEN AETCOM sensitization workshops for faculty from allocated colleges.
  4. Six day Pre- Internship Orientation Program with skills training are being conducted from April 2015onwards. Sessions were mediated by the centre.
  5. The faculty also participated in academic meetings of KUHS. The Convener is also a member of the Academic Council and Quality Assurance Council.
  6. The Centre is also involved in the preparation of online modules – fifteen(15) – for NMC (available on the website), including Pandemic Management module, Skills Training module, AETCOM (Attitude, Ethics and Communication) module etc.
  7. The Centre had also organised non-conventional training programs in Administration, Cybersecurity, IPR development, Research Methodology etc.. for all teaching and non-teaching staff in the college as well. The centre is also associating with Dental faculty and with all faculty training programs under the Academic Staff College of KUHS.
  8. The NMC Nodal Centre is also involved in implementation and monitoring of the new CBME Curriculum being implemented from 2019 MBBS Batch all over the country. This includes novel concepts like Foundation Course, Cadaver ceremony, Whitecoat ceremony, Early Clinical exposure, Vertical and Horizontal Integration, Electives etc for UG students. We are collating the implementation details and helping colleges and monitoring the function of skill labs in the allocated colleges for the National Task force of NMC as well.
