1961

First batch (1961 batch) of 50 MBBS students were selected and accommodated at Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram from 01.08.1961.

1962

Site for the Campus was identified in 1962 and acquisition begins.This area was the confluence of 3 panchayaths,viz; Kumaranalloor,Athirampuzha and Arpookara and formed part of the territorial limits of 3 villages also,ie; Perumbaikkad, Athirampuzha and Kaipuzha(Present day Arpookara)   Dr. CM Francis was appointed as Principal and Special Officer of the Medical College Kottayam. He took over on 07.05.1962 and started functioning from Kottayam town.   Semi permanent buildings were constructed to house the college and two hostels(one for 100 male and the other for 50 female students)   Second batch (01.08.1962) of 50 students were also accommodated at MC Thiruvananthapuram.   The Inspection Commission of the Kerala University visited the college on 07.10.1962 for assessing the facilities;affiliation was granted on the basis of the Commission’s report .  1962 admission (II batch – 50 students) accommodated at Thiruvananthapuram, joined the Arpookara Campus on 03.12.1962, after 3 months (September to November 1962) at TVM.   The Medical College was formally inaugurated on 03.12.1962 by Sri.R Sankar,the Chief Minister of Kerala in the presence of Sri.M P Govindan Nair,the Health Minister. Campus on the day of inauguration consisted of the semi permanent buildings to house pre clinical and para clinical departments,library,animal house,store,Ladies hostel (now DCK) and Men’s hostel (now MHSQ) besides the PWD office and 7 acquired buildings.

1963

1961 admission (First batch – 50 students) joined the campus on 06.01.1963 after First MBBS at Thiruvananthapuram.

1964

The District Hospital at Kottayam was brought under MCK and used as teaching hospital (MCH Kottayam) from January 1963 onwards; a 100 bedded block for Medicine and surgery and another 116- bedded block for O& G and Paediatrics were constructed in the DH complex in 1963 and 1964.Total 216 teaching beds.   III batch (1963) with increased strength of 60 students was admitted at MCK itself on 01.08.63. Construction of permanent buildings for hostels for men and women, quarters etc were undertaken from 1963.   Annual intake increased to 80 from 1964 batch.   An area of 2.3 square miles around the campus was declared as Controlled Area and “Kottayam Medical College Area Development Authority” was constituted to ensure proper development.

1965

The MC Health Centre at Ettumanoor was established in 1965, abolishing the Govt.Dispensary there.

1969

Construction of E, F, G block and Kitchen block of MCH at Arpookara was completed.

1970

Construction of the present OP block and laundry of MCH at Arpookara was completed.   Medical College Hospital at Arpookara was formally inaugurated by the then Minister for health Sri. K.M. George on 14.04.1970.   Departments of Medicine & Surgery were shifted from D.H. Kottayam to MCH Arpookara. Other depts. continued to function at DH Kottayam. MCH, Kottayam campus in 1970, consisted of the semi permanent buildings to house pre & para clinical departments, library, animal house, college office & central workshop (earlier women’s hostel and now part of DCK), pharmacy, MCH E,F,G block, laundry, kitchen block, women’s hostel (now MHSQ), men’s hostel, PHED, PWD office & store, Quartes type A: 01-10, B: 01-13, C: 01-17, D: 01-05, E: 01-16, F: 01-16, G: 01-34, and 7 no’s of acquired buildings.

1973

PG Courses (MS Surgery & MD Medicine) started from 1973-74. (01.06.1973)

1974

Construction of A,B,C block of MCH at Arpookara was completed; other major departments were shifted from DH Kottayam to MCH Gandhinagar in 1974 & 75.   The Campus and the surrounding locality were christened as Gandhinagar.

1975

ESI hospital with its quarters and campus was taken over from ESI Corporaton on payment and converted as Institute of Child Health in April 1975, shifting the Paediatrics dept from DH Kottayam.

1977

Strength of admission increased from 80 to 85 during 1977-78; Bed strength stood at 837.

1979

Annual intake of MBBS increased to 100 from 1979-80 admission onwards.

1980

Affiliation was shifted to Gandhiji University (renamed Mahathma Gandhi University later) when it was established in 1980’s bifurcating the Kerala University.

1982

College of Nursing, Kottayam, started functioning from May 1982 with 25 B.Sc.(Ng) students. Due to lack of facilities at MCK, it was accommodated at the college of nursing TVM.

1985

The new MC administrative block opened in Oct.1985.   College of Nursing shifted to Gandhinagar in November 1985; starts functioning from the space vacated by college office (present Dental College).

1994

Patholgy, Microbiology, Pharmacology and library shifted to the new C block.

2001

Dental College started functioning in the campus.

2003

4 major construction started.   (a) Construction of phase 1 of cardiology – cardiothoracic block started. estimate 320 lakhs.   (b) Construction of the (C2 block) intended for housing the remaining depts. Viz; Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry and Comm. Medicine, which are still functioning in the temporary buildings put up in 1962.   (c) 300 bedded hostel for nursing students ,  (d) Obst. & Gynaecology block-Phase I.

2004

Inauguration of Dental College building.

2005

Inauguration of learning resource center – January.   Inauguration of Vali’s children’s cancer care center (Leukemia ward) in ICH October.   Telemedicine project started functioning.

2006

Increase of MBBS annual intake from 100 to 150.

2008

Inauguration of Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory. Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT) Machines installed meeting the expenditure out of MP’s fund (Sri. Suresh Kurup, MP, Kottayam). Linear Accelerator costing Rs. 700/- lakhs: – Unit reached.

2010

Inauguration of Examination Hall, Library,House Surgeons Hostel. Ladies Hostel Annexe, Biogas plant for Rs. 20 lakhs, started Linear Accelerator for Radiotherapy – Rs. 7 crores in the process of installing MRI Scan Inaugurated. PG Seats enhanced. Total PG seats : 28. Trauma Care Centre Inaugurated on 4th September 2010.

2011

Linear accelerator for cancer treatment, New Cardio Thoracic block for heart surgery and new block for Obstetrics and Gynecology inaugurated.
 The increased 50 seats of MBBS has received recognition from The Medical Council . Got first three ranks in the M. G. University final MBBS examination. Started P G Courses in Radiodiagnosis and Biochemistry.

2012

 An Electrical substation was constructed to cater to the increased power consumption. A Central lab, where all tests for patient care are done under one roof was started. Radio diagnosis Department has been renovated.
Started D .M. Course in Gastroenterology Department and M.D course in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Paediatric Surgery .  Started B.C. V.T. Course.  A medical Exhibition has been conducted as part of the Golden Jubilee Celebrations.

2013

Obstetrics and Gynecology Department has been completely shifted to the new building. Kadavar transplant unit was started. Started the construction of a new Casualty block, P G Residents’ quarters, Critical care unit, and a Geriatric care unit.
Increased P G. seats of ENT, Anesthesia, Gynecology, Pathology, and Paediatrics have received recognition from the Medical Council.

2014

Cardiology and Cardiothoracic departments are completely shifted to the new building. The department became the first institute in Asia to perform more than 1000 open heart surgeries. 
Started the construction of the new building for the College of Pharmaceutical Sciences. Paediatric surgery theatre started functioning. Karunya Pharmacy, a new Pay and park facility, and 3 biogas plants for waste disposal are started.
Received the recognition for the new P G courses , started in the Biochemistry and Cardiothoracic surgery departments. MCI has approved the Medical Education Centre here as the Nodal Centre.

2015

 The following projects have started functioning:
Critical Care Unit, Cochlear Implant unit, Tele Ophthalmology Unit, Infertility Treatment Centre, Geriatric Care ICU, Drug Analysis Lab, Renovated ward 3, Dialysis centre with 30 dialysis units.

2016-17

 First Transgender clinic in India and various surgery for transgender patients started. Started heart transplant surgery programme first time in government sector.  Started cardiac rehabilitation centre first time in Kerala in Government sector. Payward and staff sick room was started in Gynecology Department. Pharmacy substore for Gynecology and Cardiology departments. Central sterile Supply Department (CSSD) became fully functional.

2018

 New casualty block in 6 floors divided into Triage, Yellow Zone and Red zone, including 6 operation theatres, Digital radiography machine,24hours pharmacy etc. Renovated OP under the Ardram project , a resting place for bystanders, 24 hours lab, Health Education Centre are inaugurated in Gynaecology department. Modular theatre for renal transplantation was inaugurated. Mortuary block renovated.
14 P. G. seats has got MCI recognition . MBBS seats enhanced from 150 to 175. The unit of in-service nursing education was established on 1st July 2018.

2019

 Second Cardiac Cathlab started functioning. Became first in the country in the number of primary angioplasties. Renovated internal roads, Early intervention and Autism Centre, Retina unit with modern facilities, onco surgery Department, Paediatric Cardiac Surgery ICU and ECHO Machine, Renovated Trauma ward, Cancer ward, Psychiatry ward, Neuro Surgery ICU, CAPD ICU in Nephrology Department, Green Protocol Project, etc. are inaugurated. Major equipments like 128 Slice CT Scan, Laproscopic machine for key hole surgery, Single Balloon enteroscope etc. are purchased.

2020

 Ardram Phase 2 Projects—Computerized primary waiting area, Orthopedics,  Cardiology, nephrology ,Neuro medicine departments secondary waiting area , Cancer OP, Computerized Cardiology OP. are inaugurated. Modular Operation theatres in Gynecology department and Pediatrics department are started functioning. Renovated Biomedical Department and Calibration lab, C T Simulator, Power laundry, Cancer , Orthopedics ICU facilities, Toilet Complex, Material Collection Facility (MCF) , Renovated Superintendent Office are inaugurated in the month of January 2020.
P G Residential quarters having 100 apartments, 450 bedded Ladies Hostel, Negative Pressure ICU, second Toilet Complex, New wards and ICU in Casualty block are inaugurated in the month of September 2020.
Started B.Sc. Perfusion Technology , B.Sc. Dialysis Technology and diploma course in CSSD (Central Sterile Services Department)

2021

 MRI Machine, D S A Machine. Second Linear Accelerator, Laqshya Project in Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department  consists of 6 LDR suites, 2 Operation Theatres, ICU ,and facilities for painless labour, House Surgeons’ Quarters, New Medical ward, BurnsWard, Skill Lab, Multi Disciplinary Research Unit, Lady’s waiting area, Ramp, Toilet and Examination Hall in Institute of Child Health, Cloth washing and drying area, ICH Canteen, Oxygen generator building are inaugurated in the month of February 2021.
Nursing College Auditorium, Renovated 7,8 wards, Oxygen Generator in ICH, 750 K.V. generator, Nephrology  lab are inaugurated in the month of September 2021. Started D M Course in Infectious Disease.

2022

 Pharmacy College New building; Renovated material Collection facility; Aerobic composting unit; Biogas plant; ICU Casualty- built under Emergency Covid Response Plan-2; Renovated Nursing Office; renovated O.P. Pharmacy; 3 modular operation theatres in casualty; Stroke unit; Integrated analyzer in Clinical Biochemistry lab are inaugurated.
