About Us
The Department of Urology at Kottayam Medical College was started by late
Professor Roy Chally in 1969. In 1970 Prof. Dr Kuriakose was transferred from
Calicut medical college and he headed the department till 1989. Prof Kuriakose retired in 1989, following which Prof Dr. V N Bhat, Prof Dr Appu Thomas, Prof Dr A L Albert, Prof Dr Mohan P Sam, Prof Dr. Suresh Bhat, Prof Dr Haris C H headed the department subsequently. Present head of the department is Prof. Dr S Vasudevan, under whom the transplant programme of the department has expanded to 2 live transplants a month. PG training program was started in 1983 with 1 PG trainee per year which was increased to 3 in 2010. The endoscopic surgeries were started in 1979. Initially TURP, TURBT and ureteric catheterisation were done. In 1996 Ureteroscopy was started, ESWL in 1998, PCNL in 2003. One of the major milestones in the department includes starting renal transplant in 2002 and cadaver transplant in 2012. Some of the latest developments in the department include flexible ureteroscopy, laser surgeries and UDS.
