About us

Department of Dermatology, Government Medical College, Kottayam started functioning as an independent department in 1972 with Dr. M.I.Joy as the first Head of Department. It is one of the pioneer Dermatology departments of Kerala and it was led by several doyens of Dermatology in the years ahead.
Department imparts competency based medical education to undergraduate MBBS students and post graduates (intake of 5 residents per year). Department provide comprehensive training in Dermatology, Venereology, Leprosy, Dermatosurgery & Cosmetology.
Department also facilitate and promote research activities among post graduates and undergraduates.
It also ensure high quality evidence based care to patients suffering from various skin diseases.
PURPOSE:
The Department of Dermatology and Venereology Government Medical College, Kottayam aims to provide comprehensive and high quality patient care, academic excellence and research facilities in the field of Dermatology, Venereology and Leprosy thus aiming to be a centre of excellence .The department aims at giving the best and highest possible evidence based treatment to the patients and to deliver them with utmost care and compassion. The department is fully committed in imparting the highest quality of teaching and training to the undergraduates and postgraduates so that they get the best possible training in the field of Dermatology, venereology and leprosy and are well equipped to serve the society once they go out of the institution. The department also aims to promote research activities among the faculty and the residents so that the department stands at par with other national institutions. By aiming to deliver exceptional health care, medical education and research activities the department aims to serve the community and the nation at large.
SCOPE OF SERVICE
The department caters to the needs of a huge population in Central Kerala and serves as a major tertiary care referral centre for Dermatology, Venereology and leprosy. The outpatient wing functions on all days except Sunday and the department is equipped with a full fledged ward for care. The department provides highly specialised treatment and efficient follow up services for the various dermatologic diseases, sexually transmitted infections and leprosy.
The department offers various dermatosurgical and cosmetic procedures to the patients. It includes procedures like Skin biopsy, Dermoscopy, Electrosurgical procedures, Radiofrequency, Excision of benign skin tumors and moles, Vitiligo surgeries, Acne surgeries, Nail surgeries, chemical peels, Iontophoresis, PRP treatment, Phototherapy, Intralesional therapies, Cryosurgery, Laser hair reduction, Laser pigment removal, Excimer laser, Botulinum toxin injection treatment ,Microblading etc.
The department has a well equipped laboratory which helps in the diagnosis of various dermatologic diseases, sexually transmitted infection and leprosy. This department also collaborates in multi disciplinary research unit, and with institutions like PGI Chandigarh, KMC Manippal.
The department imparts competency based medical education to the undergraduates and conducts regular teaching programmes for the residents including seminars, journal clubs, case based clinical discussion. They are encouraged to participate in the various states, national and international conferences. The department also hosts continuing medical education programmes aiming to keep updated about the latest development in the field of Dermatology, Venereology and leprosy. The department hosts regular online guest lectures by eminent national faculties.
History of department in brief….
The department of dermatology was established by Dr MI Joy is 1972. In 1982 IMC gave permission for 3 post graduate seats in dermatology. Dr T P Thankappan, Dr Thomas Abraham & Dr Sreedevan were the first post graduates in department.

In 2022 Dr Ajithkumar K took charge as HOD and Dr Celine MI as second unit chief.
Many eminent professors in dermatology Dr BKH Nair, Dr K Pavithran, Dr Ramachandran Nair, Dr Dharmarathnam, Dr Sivarajan, Dr Suja, Dr Jacob Thomas, Dr Beena Sunny, Dr George Kurien, Dr Devi, and Dr Lissy Skaria etc mentored and shaped our post graduates. Currently Dr Ajithkumar K is the head of the department and Dr Celine MI heads the second Unit.
Awards and Honours
Throughout the years our residents bagged many prestigious awards.
In 2010 DR Soumya Jagadeesan and Dr Veena won the national level quiz. Dr Anju K Balan was the winner of and Torrent young talent in 2013 and Dr Lekshmi won the Amala Gold medal exam. In 2023 Dr Amitta Rachel and Dr Jayalekshmi were the state runner up in IADVL quiz.
Dr Ajithkumar K was honoured with Sardarilal memorial oration by IADVL
Pondicherry in 2022 and Dr K Premalatha award for the best research project in 2024 .Dr Ajithkumar K also received the Best teacher award by IADVL in 2024.

To provide a safe and supportive environment for the patients and the health care workers.
To provide a comprehensive management by having an interdisciplinary approach whenever needed.
To ensure that the residents trained in the department are competent enough to manage the complex problems in Dermatology, sexually transmitted infections and Leprosy.
