Institute of Child Health, Govt. Medical College Kottayam comprises department of Pediatric Medicine and Pediatric Surgery and situates 2 km away from the main building of Govt. Medical College, Kottayam , ICH started function on 31st October 1975. It give service to 5 districts – the patient not only from Kottayam District, but also Idukki, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, and part of Ernakulam districts. An average 1.6 lakhs children are getting out patient service and 9500 children get in patient care annually. ICH is a tertiary care level -3 referral centre. ICH has a 24 bedded paywards under KHRW.

O.P. DETAILS
We get patients from 5 districts and about 500 to 600 patients per day received service from here and token system is applied here and there is primary and secondary waiting area with a seating capacity of 200 and 75 respectively and the patient get generic medicines from the pharmacy at free of cost.

IP.FACILITIES
An average 8500 admissions every year. Bed strength is 170. Out of this 150 beds for pediatric medicine and 20 beds for department of pediatric surgery.
Intensive Care – PICU (Pediatric Medicine Intensive care)
14 beds with all facilities for modernPICU. It has centralized oxygen, Centralized Suction, Centralized Air conditioning, 9 dedicated ventilators, Defibrilator, Syringe infusion pumps, radiant warmers, ultrasound machine and echocardiographic machines. Dedicated Intensive care is given according to ICH ICU protocol.

NICU- (Newborn Intensive Care Unit):
Level II ICU is converted to Level III High dependent ICU facilities.
Department of Pediatric surgery
Bed strength is 20 and surgical ICU 6 beds with all modern facilities.
Operation Theatre –
Modular Operation Theatre built in 2019 with all modern facilities with laminar airflow with epabhax system and which is satisfied with all criteria for an ideal surgery theatre. Laperoscopic surgeries are also done at ICH.
LAB – common hematological and biochemical investigations .
Facilities for Renal function test, liver function test, Lipid profile, Thyroid Hormone assessment, Serum Ferritin, Blood sugar, Serum calcium and CBC are available. Hormone Analyser Assay available. 1 Chemist and 6 Lab Technicians are available and we give 24 hour lab service. We assure external quality assurance is being done regularly in collaboration with Vellore Medical College. Effluent Treatment Plant is under construction
RADIOLOGY
Computerized X-ray facility is available and instant electronic delivery of x-ray images to the concerned doctors is being done daily. Number of radiological investigations are about 1600/-month.

    a. Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK)
    Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK) is an important initiative aiming at early identification and early intervention for children from birth to 18 years to cover 4 ‘D’s viz.

    • Defects at birth
    • Deficiencies
    • Diseases
    • Development delays including disability.
    b AROGYAKIRANAM
    Arogyakiranam, state Government project offering free treatment for all below 18 years of age in the state irrespective of the APL, BPL . The project envisages treatment for all kinds of diseases including cancer, heart, kidney and brain. The programme entitled all beneficiaries (excluding dependants of Govt.Servants and income tax payees) frombirth to 18 years to free investigations and treatment for all health conditions other than the 30 conditions covered under RBSK.
    c Karunya Arogya Suraksha Paddhati (KASP).
    KASP, in alignment with AB-PMJAY, will give financial protection to approximately 40 lakh households in the State and cover all major secondary and tertiary medical care services, including the treatment of cancer or cardiac diseases, in all empanelled public or private hospitals.
    In June, the government had announced the proposed integration of the existing health insurance and assurance schemes run by various departments into a pre-payment programme — KASP.The merged schemes include RSBY-CHIS, CHIS Plus, Karunya Benevolent Fund, Sukrutham, Thalolam and Arogyakiranam.
    d Mittayi
    Mittayi is a unique initiative by the Govt. of Kerala to provide a comprehensive care to the children/adolescents with Type-1 diabetes, in the state . This endocrine disorder mainly affects children of age group 5-18 years. So far 150 children with Type –I diabetis registered.
