About Us

The Department of Biochemistry at Medical College, Kottayam was set up and nurtured by one of the greatest teachers in Biochemistry – Dr. G Yejnanarayana Iyer, Msc, PhD. Under his able guidance a team of dedicated medical teachers like Dr. Mary Angela Moriera, Dr. K Ramachandran and Sri. P.N.K Menon worked sincerely for the advancement of the discipline of Medical Biochemistry in the institution.

The Clinical Biochemistry Laboratory which was set up in the hospital under the direct guidance and control of the teaching department soon earned the honour of being the most reputed and reliable clinical chemistry laboratory in Kerala state. The devotion and dedication of Sri. E.K Cherian who gave his whole career to this laboratory was its mainstay until his retirement.

The department maintained its reputation under the guidance of eminent professors like, Dr. Mary Angela Moriera, Dr. D.M Vasudevan, Dr. Leelamma Varkey, Dr. Rajan R, Dr. Leela Menon, Dr. Jaya S, Dr. Gopinathan Nair, Dr. Sreekumari S, Dr. K.S Rajasekharan Pillai, Dr. Subaida M.R, Dr. Joseph Paul Thyparambil, Dr. Geetha A and Dr. Miriam Varkey.

At present the department is headed by Dr. Jim Joe. Under his guidance, all the staff of the department are actively involved in academic activities as well as clinical laboratory services. The Clinical Biochemistry Laboratory, which is well supervised by Dr. Jisha R MD (Medical Officer) is one of the best of its kind in our state and by improving and introducing advanced methodologies like metabolic screening programs, endocrinological assays and molecular biology techniques it is striving to achieve the gold standards.

FACILITIES

The department has a Lecture Hall sufficient to include 200 students, Seminar Hall, Demonstration Room, Library and Class Rooms. Separate Students’ Practical laboratory for MD, MBBS and DMLT are available. Research laboratory is available for post graduate students.

A Clinical Biochemistry Laboratory is also run by the department which is equipped with an Integrated Clinical Chemistry and Immunoassay analyser, a Fully Automated Clinical Chemistry analyser, a Fully automated Immunoassay analyser and a High Performance Liquid Chromatography analyser.

Achievements

At present the department is conducting MBBS, MD and DMLT courses and part time classes for BDS, BSc Nursing, MSc Nursing, BSc Dialysis Technology and BSc Perfusion Technology, Diploma in Endoscopic Technology. PG students of the Department of Medicine, Surgery, O&G, Pathology, Pharmacology, Microbiology and Paediatrics are currently utilizing the facilities available in the department for research work. Students perform well in Biochemistry in the examinations and other academic activities.
