About Us

The Department of Surgical Gastroenterology is a division that delivers standard of care to the patients with illnesses related to Gastrointestinal and Hepato-pancreato-biliary system. This department got inaugurated on 7th April, 2021 by Dr. T.K. Jayakumar (Hospital Superintendent), in the presence of other administrators and faculty members.

The clinical work done in this department; out-patient clinic, in-patient care, surgical treatment and post-operative management has come out with excellent results in terms of outcome including the morbidity-mortality statistics,by protocol based management. Patients are referred from various hospitals in Kottayam, Alapuzha, Idukki, Ernakulam; and also from Kollam, Thrissur, Malappuram districts to this department for diseases requiring specialized care by Surgical Gastroenterology.The surgical work done comprises of managing various benign and malignant cases including complex gastrointestinal surgeries and advanced laparoscopic cancer surgeries.
The department got licensed for Liver Transplantation in August, 2021 and did the first Liver Transplantation (Living Donor) on 14th February, 2022. This was the first suceessful LDLT of Kerala Government sector. In 25thApril, 2023 we did our first cadaver Liver Transplantation (DDLT). We are maintain good results in our Liver Transplantation cases also

The department was awarded permission by the government of Kerala to conduct the “Fellowship in Gastrointestinal and HPB Surgery” as an academic program, thus becomes the first department to start a fellowship course in Kerala state.

The Team Surgical Gastroenterology lead by the faculty, consultants, includes senior residents, dedicated nursing team and other paramedical staff, gets hugely supported by the other specialties in this institute, imaging wing, laboratory services and administrators to maintain the quality work to manage our patients.
