About Us

Department of Neurosurgery was established in 1968 at Kottayam Medical College under Dr KM John, one of the pioneer Neurosurgeons in Kerala who was trained in the Premier Institution of Neurosurgery CMC Vellore under Prof. Jacob Chandy. . The postgraduate course was started in 1998 with 2 seats per year and was enhanced to 4 per year in 2022. This is one of the largest neurosurgical treatment and postgraduate training centers in Kerala, catering to the neurosurgical needs of 5 districts in central Kerala, namely Kottayam, Idukki, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha and Ernakulam.
The department office is situated in Ward 25. Patients are admitted to Neurosurgery ICU in Ward 25, Trauma ICU, Ward 25, Ward 7 and Ward 10(Trauma ward). Elective surgeries are done in Main Operation Theater complex and emergency cases are done in the Casualty theater.
The HDS – Neurosurgery project, started in 2017 enabled neurosurgery operation theater to work 6 days a week. A total of more than 1500 surgeries are done per year.
