About Us

The Department of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery at Government Medical College, Kottayam, is one of the busiest cardiac centres under the Government of Kerala. Each year, the department performs over 2,000 cardiac surgeries.
In 2015, the department received licensce from the Government of Kerala to perform heart and lung transplants. Under the leadership of Dr. Jayakumar T. K., Professor and Head of CVTS, the team achieved a historic milestone by performing India’s first heart transplant in the Government sector on September 15, 2015 and the first lung transplant in Kerala on 22nd. October 2025.
Continuing its pioneering efforts, the department established Kerala’s first Cardiac Rehabilitation Centre—across both government and private sectors—on April 25, 2018.
