The Metamorphosis of the department

It was started in 1961 under the illustrious headship of Dr. K. Kallyani 

The 1st batch of MBBS students were admitted in 1963.

Admissions initially were for 80 students which was enhanced to 100 students.

The pharmacy department was separated from ours in1994.

The MBBS student’s annual intake was increased to 150 in 2006

2 postgraduate seats were sanctioned the year 2010

Departmental Objectives

1. To educate the undergraduate and postgraduate medical, paramedical and science students to apply basic principles of pharmacology and therapeutics to practice rational use of drugs

2. To facilitate basic and applied research that significantly advances current pharmacological knowledge. To promote drug based research and participate in clinical trials and scientific works with special concern on the ethical aspects

3. To provide academic services and patient care facilities

4. Monitor and evaluate adverse drug reactions and promote the concept of Pharmacovigilance

2. Academic Activities

We teach and advocate the learning of basic principles of general and systemic pharmacology. Utilization of the same in a clinically oriented way will help the students to grow up to be good doctors

·                                Lectures-Theory classes for the courses run by the department.

·                                Seminars and Symposia-On the relevant pharmacology topics which need extensive reading and discussions

·                                Project works- Adverse drug reaction monitoring-As projects for the 3rd and 4th semester students Which are clinically oriented and provokes the students to think and utilize their pharmacological skills in a better way

·                                Practical works-Clinical pharmacology, Experimental Pharmacology teaching and demonstrations, charts, demonstration and computer assisted learning programmes. Pharmacy practicals with  an idea to cover the common pharmacy preparations like ORS and Normal Saline which a doctor needs to know as they are required during emergencies

·                                Tutorials in prescription writing with a stress on common medical conditions which will equip them well as junior doctors after the completion of MBBS course, drug interaction exercises, and Patient Oriented Problem Solving (POPS) exercises

·                                Periodical Evaluations-Monthly tests and Sessional exams

·                                Wall Magazine: An update on the newer drugs, pneumonic corner, adverse drug reaction corner ,and quiz corner for the students which evoke interest in students to learn and love pharmacology

Periodical Evaluation

4. Ongoing Research activities

a. Pharmacovigilance unit and ADR monitoring cell with an aim to create a database of all the adverse drug reaction occurring in the medical college hospital. This is with the whole hearted co-operation of the clinicians of various departments. The Professor and HOD is the Secretary of Pharmacovigilance Committee, MCK.

Objectives of the Programme:

Broad objectives of the Programme

·        To foster the culture of Adverse Event (AE) notification and reporting

·        To establish a viable and broad-based ADR monitoring program in MCK

Specific objectives of the Programme

·        To create an ADR database for the Medical College, Kottayam

·        To create awareness of ADR monitoring among the doctors

·        To ensure optimum safety of drug products in Indian market

·        To create infrastructure for ongoing regulatory review of PSURs

6. Achievements

1.      2 postgraduate seats were sanctioned in the year 2010

2.      The training programme offered by the Department is of the highest standards.  The MBBS

         students acquire many distinctions and high first classes. The University topper in 2009 -2nd MBBS

         exams in this subject was from this institution.

3.      The HOD of the department deliver various guest lectures and is resource personnel for several

         CME programmes and Conferences

4.      Research publications in various indexed and non indexed journals

5.      Paper presentation and best paper awards at National and Regional Conferences


7. Other Activities

1. Our department is in charge of conducting the Institutional Review Board of the Institution.

a.  The Scientific Review Committee (SRC) which is constituted by 3 members is held once in 2 months

      and The Professor and HOD of the department is the Member Secretary.

b.   The Institutional Ethics Committee (IEC) which is constituted by 10 members is held once in 2

      months  and The Professor and HOD of the department is the Member Secretary

8. Future prospects

1. Research

It is hoped that the department will contribute significantly to basic and clinical research which will be appreciated both nationally and internationally. Our efforts are to conduct meaningful collaborative research and clinical trials which will bear favorable outcomes in the future. We hope to make significant contributions in the field of health care through our research.

2. Academics

Postgraduates-We intend to set up a full fledged postgraduate course which will equip the students to be well placed in different arenas like the Teaching institutions, Industries, Research Fields, Hospitals or pursue their career as students in DM Clinical Pharmacology.

Undergraduates-We intend to train the undergraduates the basic principles of pharmacology with a clinical co-relation which will be helpful for them as junior doctors and while preparing for the postgraduate entrance exams
